Toshiba Names Ken Sutherland President of Toshiba Medical Visualization Systems Europe.

Ongoing investment in Edinburgh facility demonstrates continued commitment to Scotland

Edinburgh, Scotland: May 9th 2013 - Toshiba Medical Systems Corporation has named Ken Sutherland president of Toshiba Medical Visualization Systems Europe Ltd. (TMVS). As president, Dr. Sutherland has complete responsibility for all TMVS’s activities.

TMVS, based in Edinburgh, designs advanced medical imaging software that takes the output from CT, MRI, X-ray and Ultrasound scanners to produce 3D images for use by clinicians, to aid diagnosis and treatment. These cutting edge medical imaging solutions improve the quality of treatment for patients and reduce the cost of providing that treatment.

For the past three years TMVS, part of Toshiba Medical Systems Corporation (TMSC) - a major R&D division of Toshiba, has worked on advanced medical imaging projects supported by a £3m R&D grant from Scottish Enterprise, one of the biggest life sciences R&D projects the agency has ever supported.

Most recently TMVS introduced Luminance, a 4-D rendering and lighting technique that produces highly detailed foetal images; it can be used to examine the foetal face and other anatomical structures by applying colour and illumination to enhance features.

Ken Sutherland is a member of the Scottish Government’s Life Sciences Advisory Board; he holds a PhD in Image Analysis from Edinburgh University and has worked in senior roles for NCR, IndigoVision and Barco, all in Scotland. In 2007 Ken left his position as director with Telindus in Cambridge to return to Scotland and take up the role of R&D manager with Barco, which was subsequently acquired by Toshiba in 2009.
